My father got me into radio controlled at age 14.  It has since been a passion of my everyday life.  I started out building rubber band models.  After that my father taught me how to build and fly radio controlled airplanes.  Shortly after that I got into gliders, then 4 channel powered planes.  My father being a product manufacture traveling to trade shows, attending events like the QSAA and the TOC  gave me greaet interest and inspiration to fly giant aerobatic airplanes.  With the introduction of 3D electric aircraft, I was able to learn  a lot about aerobatic manuevers and 3D flying.  I currently fly all different types of aircraft, electric, glow and gas.  My main interest are scale warbird pylon racing and free-style 3D flying.

My father Don Harris has been modeling since he was a child.  After retiring at the age of 39 from his sandblasting business he moved rom Los Angeles up to Auburn, California in 1977.  In 1980 Don designed a biplane called a Half Breed PJ260 part his own design.  It sported an 87"wing, weighed 27lbs and had a custom 3.7 cubic inch chain saw engine Don converted himself to operate as a model aircraft motor.  The biplane had a custom built smoke muffler and hand built smoke pump.  Don built the pump out of parts he salvaged that consisted of an old servo motor, some slot car gears, a vein style pump head and an aluminum mounting bracket.  The pump was powered by a 4.8v battery and on and off control was operated by a servo actuating a micro roller switch.

The first pumps were not hand made like his original but purchased overseas from Japan and then Germany.  Don would modify the pump unit to work with r/c aircraft.  As time went on supply and demand changed for the pump units Don was purchasing and this led him to start manufacturing the necessary parts to build his own pumps.  Don even went to the extent of building his own machine to re-wind small dc electric motors to his liking for power and current draw.  In the early 90's Don had his own surface mount electronic switch made specifically to work on his pump.  He was the first to sell a smoke pump that plugged directly into the receiver for power, just like a servo, used very little current and was light weight.

The new pump design was small and light enough to put in a .90-1.20 size glow plane.  The pump was widely used by TOC pilots because of its small light size and unmatched reliability.  Don finally quit making his pump and retired for good in 2003.  Four years later my father and I, Chance Harris put new and old together to create a new breed of smoke pump.  With Don's experience and my vast knowledge of brushless motor technology, we designed a new pump smaller and lighter and more efficient than the old school Harris Smoke Pump.

I began manufacturing the new generation three brushless motor programmable flow rate Harris Smoke Pump in January of 2008.  The new unit is 2.5in long, 1.5in diameter and weighs only 2.2 ounces.  The Generation 3 Harris Smoke Pump draws around 300-600maH and operates on 4.8v to a 2 cell lipo, 8.4v max.
